Many cell phones are made to use a SIM card - a Subscriber Identification Module - which stores subscriber data. The SIM card is issued by the carrier (carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Alltel, and others use SIM cards) and is used to activate the phone. Locked cell phones will only recognize a particular carrier while unlocked cell phones will recognize any carrier.

I am looking at upgrading the cell phone to a Blackberry. If I purchase the phone somewhere else besides my cell phone carrier store, how do I add the phone to the plan? I would like to stop using my old phone and use the new Blackberry instead and simply use the same phone number. How do I change phones?
